Tao Chan Wing Chun competitions

If the interested student looks around in the Wing Chun / Wing Tsun society, he will notice that there are hardly any competitions. Why is this?

Well, for one reason, some Wing Tsun people have been defeated when they have climbed into the ring with experienced thai boxers or wrestlers, and there is a danger that the supposedly “unbeatable” system of some self-proclaimed masters will get a scratch if the “unbeatable” disciple is suddenly lying defeated on the ground. The main point argued here by some masters is that somebody could not use "deadly techniques" in a competition because Wing Tsun would have been made for emergency situations”.

Here we may then ask the counter question: "And is thai boxing not intended for emergency situation, isn’t it?" If so, why have there been competitions for centuries and it has done no harm to anyone? Is it perhaps because at that time the Sifus have never tried to hide behind marketing and that there were no student and teacher levels?

Of course, Wing Chun is also suitable for the competition, but it must be held in an honourable atmosphere and not for showmanship or self-adulation or for promoting violence.

For this reason, the Tao Chan Wing Chun Organization will also conduct competitions from the 3rd   student level up to the 5th master level started in 2017. Since Chi Sao is a training method and not thought for competition – despite even in Hong Kong some organizations use it for competition which is a wrong way – we have competitions in semi-contact and full-contact only. Since, not all students want to participate in competitions, the participation is voluntary and has no influence on the student level or the learning progress. The professional full contact competitions are of course conducted in a professional ring as in thai boxing under similar rules and medically supervised.
